What do we know about the Mastercard interchange fees claim?
Between May 1992 and June 2008, Mastercard charged excessive interchange fees on card transactions — pushing up retail prices for millions of UK shoppers.
A major class action resulted in a £200 million settlement, with around £100 million reserved for payments to eligible UK consumers who submit a valid claim.
The Competition Appeal Tribunal has approved the settlement. Up to 46 million adults could share the payout, making it one of the largest consumer redress schemes in UK history.
You automatically become a member of the class if you were either a resident of Scotland for at least three consecutive months between 22 May 1992 and 21 June 2008 or England, Wales or Northern Ireland for the same period between 20 June 1997 and 21 June 2008. You must have been aged 16 or over during those three months. Additionally, for non-business purposes, you must have bought goods at a supermarket that accepted Mastercard cards. It’s not necessary to have held or used a Mastercard card for these purchases. Finally, you must have been living in the UK on 6 September 2016
